A Fresh Look at the Health Secrets of The World's Greatest Entertainer

Orlando, FL (Sept. 2019) — Connecting with Doug E. Fresh after an incredible performance, back when I was still early in my own health transformation.

My wife recently returned from the 72nd Boule of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., in Las Vegas. She was a delegate for her local chapter, where over 27,000 members from around the globe enjoyed a week packed with business sessions, leadership workshops, community engagement, sisterly connections and nightly entertainment. On Sunday, July 19th, they set a Guinness World Record for the most people (2,282) simultaneously assembling hunger relief packages—packing 15,000 weekend meal bags, and providing 250,000 diapers for families in need. Well done, Ladies!🩷💚💛🖤

Later that same night, hip hop legend, Doug E. Fresh, The Original Human Beatbox, took the stage as the headline entertainment. My wife described the entire day, beginning to end, as phenomenal!

A long-time fan of Doug E. Fresh, I was reminded of the first time we met in 2019 when he performed at an event I attended. He truly delivered on his claim as The World’s Greatest Entertainer. His music is clean, he knows how to connect with his audience, and his vocal percussion—creating beats using only his voice—was indeed, phenomenal. Equally impressive was how remarkably young he looked. He had just turned 53 the day before but didn't appear much older than he did in his twenties! At that time, I was still trying to improve my own health and wanted to know his health secrets. Funny thing is, they weren't secret at all, as @TheRealDougEFresh is very public about his approach to wellness.

Health Secrets: Diet and Lifestyle

I learned that the Barbados-born, Harlem-raised rapper prioritizes a great night's sleep above all else. He strives for at least seven solid hours but shuns an alarm clock in favor of his natural circadian rhythm. Since the 1980s, he hasn't eaten meat and has followed a vegetarian or vegan diet for over 25 years. His focus is on consuming plants, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains. He doesn’t smoke, drinks mostly water, and avoids sugary beverages and alcohol—probably not the stereotype most people would associate with hip-hop. (And for the record, my habits were the opposite of these with the exception of not smoking.)

Health Secrets: Physical Fitness and Mental Well-Being

Douglas E. Davis, known professionally as Doug E. Fresh, shared in a 2024 interview with the Indie Post that he routinely runs 5-6 miles each morning to boost his energy and well-being. These runs are crucial not only for his physical fitness but also for mental clarity and setting a positive tone for the day. He also mixes in calisthenics and body-weight exercises, and is known for enticing fellow artists to push-up challenges while traveling together. He stated, "My health is my top priority because if I'm not in good health, I can't help anyone else."

In a 2023 episode of the Tamron Hall Show, Doug E. discussed the importance of a "daily cry" to release tension and avoid bottling up emotions. Society often stigmatizes emotional expression, especially for men, but the hip-hop icon sees vulnerability as vital for mental health. Crying provides him with a therapeutic outlet to process stress and anxiety. He said, "Tears were created to release the tension instead of holding it in." Doug E. advocates for emotional health and encourages open conversations about feelings, promoting a holistic approach to well-being that includes both body and mind. (Again, for the record, I was personally trending better in these areas, but realized there was much more room for growth.)

Hip Hop Public Health

Before Doug E. was recruited in 2014 by First Lady Michelle Obama as a "Let's Move" celebrity ambassador, he was already making an impact on public health. In 2006, Dr. Olajide Williams, a neurologist and health behavior change expert at Columbia University, teamed up with Doug E. Fresh to construct a new approach to health education called Hip Hop Public Health.
